After a raunchy affair with a StarQuest's hot little sis named Laser , I own a Conquest once a again.
Time to make this a 3 some , I have a 91 Laser , 86 Conuest ,87 Conquest and a plan
87 will get a tubed front end , motor/harness/ecu will go into the 86 , Laser motor will get swapped into the 87, mated to a w58 I have sitting around. 86 has no motor so that speeds things up.
I'll update this thread and possibly split it to document both swaps. |

welcome back, couldn't help but notice an Ohio tag on the front of red quest. Good luck with the swap. i have a 90 laser turbo motor sitting on my engine stand that will eventually make it into my parts car someday if i ever get some time to work on it. |

Yes just south of Cleveland .
I have a 90 on the stand too , but just didn't feel like dealing with the 90 quirks , 91 6 bolt it is .
These swaps will be easy since I have full harness's and ECU's for both.
I also have a minty front clip for the red one , stashed in the attic from past Quest.
Pic updates coming tonight. |

Finally had some time to work on the car.
Quest parts for sale
This has to be one of the best lubricated engines I've ever worked on , 1/2in oil sludge caked everywhere , prevented rust though |

Well I finally got both wiring harness's out , thanks fella's I would still be yanking on that AC condensor if it weren't for the writeup telling me there is "2" bolts up top under the insulation.
Pulled the 87 motor out and here it is :
Professor is this how were supposed to fix valve cover leaks

Baby steps over here , painstakingly slowest swap ever. Not enough hours in the day, made some progress in the right direction.
Still have a long , long way to go as far as cleaning goes.
This oil is ridiculous , should have just one of my spare transmissions.

Most guys would lose interest....after dicking-around for a year. I hope a 2.0L floats your boat....it don't float mine.
Myself...I ain't pulling greasy engines. I power-wash da piss outta them first.
When they are REALLY nasty...I take em' to the DIY car wash FIRST, leave the heavy grease behind, THEN I'll detail it a lil' further at the shop...then remove that BROKEN hunk-o-shit. |

Guys tear their cars apart to install MPI....3 years later it's still sitting there, rusting the fuel tank.
Hope you find the W58 trans easy to find...and I hope it ain't beat-ta-shit too, like most of those 4G63 engines are.
For ALL the chatter I read....I don't recall a COMPLETED, 4G63 conversion done with PLENTY of pics to back-up their claims. |

I don't get it. Somebody would detail/paint a valvecover...yet EVERYTHING around it looks like hell?
Are you just building a beater? |

Just getting this black one up and running and handing it off to my friend who is the owner . He can deal with that mess , It just needs to be in his possesion before the snow hits Basically he gets to do the tinkering around and making it look puurty.
Next pics will be fitting the 2.0L and measuring for my water neck adapter pipe

Ohhh, I see. Your not building a car for yourself...which explains WHY you didn't remove the ABS while the engine was out. |

I guess I should explain the agreement we have.
The owner of both cars a friend of mine John, moved to NC from OH. Upon moving he had to do something with these 2 cars , last minute. The black 86 Conquest had no motor , and the red 87 hit the back of a quick stopping truck and ate the bumper hitch and ball .
So we agreed if he could store them at my house , and upon me swapping the running motor in , I could in turn have the red 87 and a W58 .
I had a year previously picked up a spare complete 4g63 w/ harness for $300.
And that about brings us to where we are today .
He's just looking forward to getting the car to NC , and enjoying work on it at his own pace down there , modding it etc...
So really I guess we haven't gotten to the "Custom Engine Swap" yet , but were getting closer...... |
